Copywriters HATE Them for these Five Writing Tips

By Brooklyn Pfanstiel and Caroline Ward

After a long day of Zoom classes and virtual meetings, it’s time to sit down and crank out that copywriting deliverable. Buckle down, put on your blue light glasses and check out these copywriting tips!

Understand your audience.

Do you kiss your mother with that mouth? We didn’t think so. Just like you change the way you speak and act around different people, you must also adjust your writing style to unique audiences. The same persuasive approach you use with your parents won’t have the same impact on your peers. Be strategic.

Do your research.

To be strategic, you have to come prepared. Do lots of preliminary research on what your audience represents and what it’s seeking from you. This is the most effective way to leave a lasting impression and make your audience feel ~seen.~

Keep it short and sweet.

People are lazy. They want instant gratification. They want to take the least amount of time possible to understand your point. So, tell people your point and why they should take stake in it. Include a clear call to action, and be sure to do this without all the added fluff your high school English teachers convinced you was *peak* writing quality. A simple rule of thumb: more periods, fewer commas.

Let your personality shine.

The most compelling, innovative copywriting comes from unique perspectives. Writing in your personal style with your own flair is what separates the good from the great. From injecting your humor to allowing your experiences to influence your approach to an assignment, copy written from the heart is bound to impress.

Make yourself at home.

While you cannot control your writer's block or your deadlines, you can control your surroundings. Light a fall-scented candle. Order your favorite coffee or tea from a local business. Tell Alexa to play your favorite playlist. Create an environment that stimulates ideas, makes you feel comfortable and gets those creative juices flowing.
