Which Capstone Agency Department is the Right One for You?

by Grace Brindley.

When I began the process of applying for Capstone Agency, I can remember feeling unsure about which department would be the best fit for me. On the initial application form, there is the option to select multiple departments, choosing from account management, media, strategy, copy, graphic design and creative media. Below is a breakdown of the roles and responsibilities of each department and perspectives from students who are a part of them.

Account Management

Account executives (AE) oversee and manage their client teams. This might be the right department for you if you constantly think about the big picture, and communicate and work well with others. AEs attend and facilitate both client team meetings and meetings with their client. They also oversee budgets and timelines and act as the liaison between the client and their team.

“I like to describe AEs as both the coach and the cheerleaders of the team. We keep everything organized and ensure everything is running smoothly, and we also encourage and uplift our team so we can be as productive as possible,” Account Executive Jenna Richardson said.

Media

Media associates facilitate both traditional media and social media for their clients. They plan social media content and write traditional action items, such as press releases. This might be the right department for you if you like writing in AP style and engaging with social media, and if you want to tell your client’s story through earned media.

Morgan Wroblewski, the editorial director of Capstone Agency and a media coordinator for the Alabama Broadcasting Association client team, said: “The media department in Capstone Agency has been a home of growth and learning for me in the past two years. I have gained so much experience from our meetings and have made amazing friendships!”

Strategy

Strategists for CA write briefs and develop strategies identifying strengths and possible opportunities for their client. Strategy might be a good fit for you if you think analytically and like finding solutions that are outside of the box.

Madeline Yob, a junior strategist for National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration client team, said: “The strategy department has taught me a wide variety of skills and helped me to curate my knowledge to better suit my client team. The department holds such a robust group of bright and talented individuals who are ready to deliver their best work and bring new ideas to the table. It has been so much fun to work with these young professionals and I’m looking forward to my next few years in the agency!”

Copy

Copywriters produce copy for social media, newsletters, blog posts, video scripts and websites. This might be the right department for you if you enjoy storytelling and writing creatively.

“Being in the copy department has given me the skills necessary to produce engaging social media content for a client. Good writing is a lifelong skill and having copywriting experience for a real-world client is now something that I can include on my résumé, which is very valuable,” Ellie First, junior copywriter, said.

Graphic Design

Graphic designers meet their clients' visions through the production of visuals, such as social media graphics, printed deliverables and brand identities. This might be the right department for you if you have a passion for art and design.

Maggie Sullivan, a junior graphic designer, said: “I have absolutely loved doing graphic design! Coming into the agency, I didn’t have any experience with Adobe Suite, which is so essential to graphic design. Through Capstone Agency, I have learned so much about graphics and have become very well-versed in Illustrator and InDesign. Capstone Agency is my favorite part of the week, and I can’t wait for many more semesters of fun!”

Creative Media

There’s also our incredible Creative Media department, which features both producing and web development positions. Producers both shoot and edit photos and videos, while web designers generate and update websites for their clients. Both call for creativity and collaboration to meet client expectations.

Senior Producer Sydney Huckaby said: “I love being in creative media because of the personal and professional experience I’ve gained. As a senior, Capstone Agency has been one of my greatest college experiences, because I can put into practice what I learned in class. Now I feel more prepared than ever to tackle the job market this coming year!”

Whatever department you decide on, Capstone Agency is incredibly flexible and even empowers associates to switch departments at the end of the semester. I encourage everyone reading this blog post to apply for Capstone Agency; our spring application will open soon, and Capstone Agency is a great opportunity to get more involved and gain experience!
